Welcome to our website!
Greetings in PURPLE and GOLD!
As president of the Metro-Jackson Alcorn Alumni Chapter, I welcome you in that "Old Alcorn Spirit".
Our chapter is a nonprofit organization and is a chartered branch of the Alcorn State University National Alumni Association. Chapter members are graduates and supporters of the university who reside in the Jackson, Mississippi metropolitan area.
Although, our primary goals are recruitment and scholarships, we are also a community service organization. It is our desire to lay the foundation for a rewarding future for the youth of the Metro-Jackson area. We have taken giant steps towards meeting the challenges of our mission by continuing to participate in or sponsor the following community-oriented activities.
· The chapter adopted the Community Nursing Home and Raines Elementary School. As the
adopted parent of these entities, members of the chapter are frequent visitors to each. The chapter provides personal care items for the nursing home, holiday gifts and hosts activities for its residents. Some of those activities include, Movie Night, Bingo and Ice Cream Safaris. This project is very dear to each of our hearts because the Young Alcornites Committee with Ms. Katalba Allen as chairman convinced the chapter to embrace it. Members of the chapter support Raines Elementary by volunteering twice per week to tutor and read to the students. The chapter also purchases school supplies for Raines each year at the beginning of the school term.
· We join the Jackson, MS chapters Jackson State and Mississippi Valley State Universities as a host of "JAM". This is an annual event held in Jackson on the third Monday in August of each year to kick of the football season for each university. During this event our chapter awards a $500 scholarship to an Alcorn student from the Metro-Jackson area. This scholarship is given in addition to a $2,000 scholarship awarded annually to a high school senior or junior college sophomore from the Metro-Jackson area who attends Alcorn.
· For the past 20 years the chapter has sponsored the Alcorn football broadcast over the airways of WMPR (90.1 FM) radio station.
· While serving our community we want to continue the tradition of fun, fellowship and unity while making our Alcorn more visible in the Metro-Jackson area and more accessible to future students. In June of each year, the chapter hosts a picnic for members and chapter supporters. Members and meeting guests are also treated to a Christmas brunch each year.
We beam with pride as we reflect on the contributions our chapter has made to Alcorn, but we still desperately need the participation and support of all alumni. We boast of being the largest chapter in Alcorn State University's National Alumni Association but we realize that in order to become a more viable source of strength for Alcorn, we must have a strong membership.
I am most grateful to the members of the Metro-Jackson Alcorn Alumni Chapter for entrusting the leadership of a dynamic organization to me. I pledge to do everything within my power to uphold the trust, integrity and responsibilities that accompany my position. I am issuing a plea for all alumni of Alcorn State University who reside in the Jackson metropolitan areas to join the alumni chapter. The fate of our alma mater now rest upon our shoulders. Do you have "The Audacity to Stand Up, Speak Out and Secure the Future Alcorn?"
Cordially,
Marian Mixon
